A Broken Resolution and the End of the Tunnel

A few weeks ago, I made a resolution to do more writing on this blog and less reading of others’ blogs. This did not work, as you can see. I finally got rid of a bit of laziness and am back … sort of.

We’re in week 15 of Ambleside Year 1 in 18 weeks. We can see the end. We’ve left some things out since we don’t have a car to take us to the library at a moment’s notice. Notably, the Holling books and the D’Aulaire books. I plan to pick those up and read them as time permits. Plus, I have two more kids. T can pick them up in his free reading time or listen in when D starts Year 1 in the fall of 2007. If all goes well, we should have a two week break before the next term (Year 2, Term 1 in August).

I have more, but it’s of a more negative nature, so I won’t expound. But for those of you who may need a lift, the short story is that we have too much dawdling in our household. Tips are welcome.

T’s Arm – Update

Last night T went to bed with a bare arm – no splint, no ace bandage. He woke up with some pain, so we rewrapped his hand and wrist only.

Today, he wore the ace for the first hour or so. He was “too embarrassed” to wear the bandage in the store, so we took it off in the parking lot. After that, we went to the park for 2 hours. No pain, no problems. I’m glad he’s feeling better…

Domestic Functions and a Broken Arm (Almost)

We’ve been taking a short hiatus from school this week, focusing on domestic functions. The big news is that T almost broke his wrist.

Wednesday evening, after pajamas were on but before bed, T was spinning. He lost his balance and fell on his wrist. By 8:45 he was with Daddy at the ER. They took three x-rays of his wrist and determined that it was not broken. However, they were not positive on this and had us make appointments with his pediatrician and an orthopedist. They said he could return to school on Thursday. We all laughed at this.

Thursday was spent retrieving the x-ray films from the hospital and visiting the pediatrician. He felt that the ER neglected to look at his elbow, as breaking an elbow often translates as pain in the wrist. So, he took two more x-rays. T did tolerably well through all of this, though he was terrified of the radiation and pain. At this visit, his arm was still in a great deal of pain. However, up to this point, there had been little to no swelling.

Finally, Friday morning we went to see the orthopedist. After doing many more tests on T’s arm and studying the x-rays, he determined that there was, in fact, no break! Yeah! However, nothing in medicine is 100%, as a fracture could still be present and might not show up on x-rays for a few more days. We went home with the direction to watch it carefully, use the splint/sling/ace bandage as needed, and call if, after two weeks, the pain is not gone or gets worse.

Tonight, T went to bed with a bare arm. I think he’ll be just fine! :-)
