T is finally finished with Year 2, Term 2 of Ambleside Online. We start Term 3 on Monday. This term has taken us longer than expected. I have learned to slow down to minimize T’s frustration level. The results have been very gratifying. Hardly any complaints about school, other than the fact that we have to do it at all.
We did make one change to the curriculum this term. We decided to drop Pilgrim’s Progress and Parables from Nature for the present. I do think they’re worthy, but they were causing too much frustration, especially during narrations. First, I plan to find a more kid-friendly version of Pilgrim’s Progress. Second, I plan to have all the boys listen to them read aloud. I will not be following AO’s schedule for these, but will be making up my own. We will probably just read straight through. I may incorporate them into Group Time. We’ll see.
T will be attending a speech and language group for two weeks this summer to focus on his pragmatics, oral and written communication. Also, we plan to start using Visualizing and Verbalizing, by Nanci Bell. This is a program which helps children with comprehension and concept imagery. During this time, all other school work will be temporarily suspended for T while we focus on these skills. Term 3 will probably also take longer than expected. I may end up starting the fall term a few weeks later. I’ll just have to see how things turn out.
D is currently in Year 1, Term 1. Since I started him about 8 months earlier than I had planned, I’m ok with Term 1 lasting until winter break. Hopefully, in January, 2008, T will be in Year 3, Term 2 and D will be in Year 1, Term 2. That would make me feel better, as I like things to be neat and aligned, if only on paper.
