A Poor Start

We’ve decided that our official first day of school will be the day after Labor Day. OK. Fine. But…we’re still on our summer schedule. We have all been waking up way too late! We need to get back on track somehow. Personally, I am struggling to  1) go to bed by 10:30, and 2) wake by 7. Is this so much to ask? Late last night, my body decided to grace me with a severe sinus headache. My darling gave me two white pills before he left today, and before I got out of bed. I don’t even know what they were. The headache finally began to subside around 10. I say began, because it’s still lingering slightly. I had three cups of coffee, and that seems to also have helped. However, since I’m late, I’ll never get done. I have a kitchen full of dishes that I was too beat to do last night (did I mention that the dishwasher’s broken, so I’ll have to do them by hand?). In addition to the regular laundry, I have a load of sheets from an, um, nighttime accident. I also have much folding to do. Plus, the children want to eat, play, and read! Of all the nerve! I may not be done with my regularly scheduled chores before 3! Sigh. I can’t wait to try again. But tomorrow’s Saturday!

UPDATE: Looks like a little venting went a long way. Or was it the coffee? Dishes are done and done. Laundry is folded. Boy washed & dried his own bedclothes. Other boy cooked breakfast for lunch, aka scrambled egg sandwiches, at noon for himself and little brother. I also cleaned all three bathrooms, at least the basins and toilets, and spent about 1.5 hours deep cleaning the little boys’ room and rearranging the furniture so I could clean out from under it. I ended up putting most of their toys into the hall closet, leaving only books, 2 Magna Doodles, some guys, and a Star Wars vehicle. They were delighted and spent the hour during dinner prep (done by my loving husband) upstairs playing. Now it’s bedtime routines followed by some reading and/or knitting. Lovely.

Guess My Name

Do your kids call you Mama?  Daddy ? Here’s what mine call me

Princess Leia

Rose Tyler

Mira Nova

Kanga

Mrs. McGregor

Maria (not my name)

I’m sure Maid Marian and Joan of Arc will follow as soon as they are introduced. Luckily, from a young age, I’ve always answered to about anything. Just not, "Who did this!"

Wrapping Up the Summer

Well, summer drags on. The highs lately have been over 100.  That means that T’s room, with the ac vent closed off to prevent remodeling dust from penetrating the rest of the house, reaches well over 80 degrees. Opening the window just makes it hotter. So, I’ve tried to work up there only before 12 noon or after dark. It’s not going as quickly as I’d planned, but hey, I’m doing it myself. I posted a makeshift daily schedule to follow until the room is finished to keep us on track.  I included reading times, work times, and errand times. My goal is to have at least the painting done by September 1. That gives us two weeks before school starts. Then we can finally do the floor. Of course, earlier is always better.

Our new start date is September 4. Local schools start August 27, and that’s when we attend the local homeschool group’s Not Back to School swim party. We’ll only be a week behind. We ended last year in the middle of Year 2 for T and Year 1 for D. We’ll pick up where we left off. In the mean time, I’d like T to finish his math book if possible. He only has a chapter left, I think. Should be doable. Of course, I have to tell him about it first.
